The Basics on How the Automated Meter Reading (TWACS®) Will Work Member’s Meter: Located inside the meter is an IMT (Integrated Metering Transponder) that provides the electrical consumption, demand, and related billing information. It has a unique ID number and is capable of communicating with equipment at the substation via the existing power lines located throughout FEC’s service territory. Substations: Specialized equipment, OMU (Outbound Modulation Unit) and CRU (Control and Receiving Unit), will be installed at each substation that will obtain the necessary billing information from the member’s meter through the use of the existing power lines. This equipment will act as a link between the customer’s meter and FEC’s home office. FEC’s Office: A computer, TNS (TWACS® Net Server), will be housed at FEC’s office and will collect the meter readings and load data from the substation via telephone lines. The data will then be imported into FEC’s current billing system.
